Story Time: I almost met Janet Jackson! Part 1

So, Janet Jackson has been back in the spotlight lately with her new documentary. She has been ding several interviews promoting and discussing her documentary. I enjoyed watching it. A lot of the stuff I knew about but it was great for her to tell her own story.

Well enough of that, that’s not why you clicked on this post. I was thinking back to the first ever concert I went to back in 2002. It was Janet Jackson’s All For You Tour Live in Hawaii. It was the very last show and it was live on HBO! I was in the audience. Today, February 16, 2022 makes 20 years ago that I was able to attend the show. What an amazing thing for an 18 year old broke college student to experience!

You maybe wondering how did I get to go… Well there was a contest that HBO was sponsoring, all you had to do was enter and randomly a winner was chosen and the winner could bring a friend. I entered and didn’t think anything of it…

One day, I went to study at Davis library (on UNC Chapel Hill’s Campus, Go Tarheels!). I hadn’t been there long and I got a phone call. The lady on the other end was like congratulations you won the contest. I was like what? She was like you won the contest to go on an all expenses paid trip to Hawaii to Janet Jackson’s All For You Tour. I was like wow. She gave me all of the instructions and what to do. I had to sign all the papers and return via FedEx and I had to do it quick. So, then I was on the phone with this guy from HBO and the others as they booked the trip. I had whole itinerary, it was quick trip. Y’all I had a driver come pick me up, hotel accommodations, tickets to the show. All I had to do was pay for incidentals, food, and a ride to the show. I still had a little money in my bank account for food. I didn’t spend all my refund check lol.

Until next time, keep being distinctive.
